Kelaniya Uni. overall champions

The University of Kelaniya with a total of 141 points emerged overall champions at the inter-university track and field athletic meet held in Colombo recently. The University of Ruhuna emerged runners-up with a tally of 138 points. The University of Peradeniya were placed third with 128 points followed by University of Jaffna (110), University of Colombo (91), University of Moratuwa (57), University of Sri Jayewardenapura (39), Rajarata University (35), Sabaragamuwa University (12) and South East University (2).

The University of Kelaniya also won the men's championship collecting a total of 92 points. The University of Jaffna were the runners-up in the men's championship with 61 points.

The University of Ruhuna were placed third with 58 points followed by University of Moratuwa (52), University of Peradeniya (51), Rajarata University (13), University of Colombo (37) and University of Sri Jayewardenapura.

The University of Ruhuna won the women's championship with a total of 80 points while University of Peradeniya emerged runners up with 77 points.

The University of Colombo were placed third in the women's championship with 54 points followed by University of Jaffna (49), University of Kelaniya (49), Rajarata University (22), University of Sri Jayewardenapura (15) and Sabaragamuwa University (12).

In the individual events Ranjith Kumara of University of Jaffna established three new meet records in the men's 110 metres hurdles, pole vault and in the long jump event. Sugath Kumara of University of Ruhuna and A.S.R. Ahmed of University of Kelaniya also setup a new meet record in the men's 5000 metres and men's high jump respectively.

In addition the University of Kelaniya 4 X 100 metres relay team comprising of U. Hapuarachchi, S.B. Herath, J.R. Ranasinghe and R.D. Jayasinghe established a new record clocking 43.8 seconds. In the women's championship M.D. Kularatne and R.N. Fernando established a record in the triple jump and javelin throw event respectively.
