Hot competition expected at Gajaba Super Cross 2003

by Bernard Perera

The fourth annual Gajaba Super Cross 2003 organised by Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee will be worked off tomorrow at Saliyapura Circuit maintained by Gajaba Regiment.

The events are conducted by Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders has attracted over 120 competitors for both categories (four wheelers and two wheelers).

A total of 25 events are to be flagged off on this day. The riders and drivers who are competing for the SLARDAR Championship 2003 will have tough competition at this meet. The five championship events are 125cc motor cycles racing 250cc racing, mini cars, formula event and the open event.

The open event for Super Cars M&T cars up to 3600cc will definitely be a thriller with four Mitsubishi Evolutions in competition. The most powerful one being Evo VIII driven by Dinesh Deheragoda. The other three driven by Riyaz Farouk, Pradeep Jayawardena and Aravinda Premadasa who has switched to Evo's for the first time.

The others in battle for supremacy in this class are Sajitha Wedisinghe (Nissan Pulsar), Mario Dias (Nissan Pulsar), Nalin D. Perera (Subaru-Impressar), Nihal Premaratne, Ravi Mayadunne and Rizvi Farouk all in Honda Civics.

In the mini section Thisith de Silva, K. Balasingham, K. Parameshwaram and Hafiz Cader will hot up their engines to gain supremacy.

Group A cars 12kg and upto 14 kg the driver who did extremely well at the last meet at Fox Hill Upulwan Serasinghe is sure to face tough competition from Nishan Wasalatanthri, Dilshad Hamdoon, Prabath Senanayake and Bandula Seneviratne. Dilshan Malagamuwa who is based in Japan and moves to his motherland whenever a meet is on will drive a Suzuki McPride 660 in the M&T Cars upto 1050 cc. He will confront stiff competition from K. Parameshwaram, Samantha Gunawardene and Hafiz Cader who are in cars with more capacity.

The two wheeler category too expected to keenly contest among local riders. The three riders from India failed to produce their top performance at the recently concluded Kaluaggala Super Cross. Specially C. Vijay Kumar who stole the lime light at the Fox Hill Five events to become the champion will have to give his best regain the lost prestige.

The other two Indian Rehman and Prasad too will have go flat if they are to pose a threat to local riders who are in topping condition along with their machine. Gayan Sandaruwan, Bultjens brothers and Rohan Jayaratne are capable of playing a dominant role on their bikes to thrill large number of motor racing fans expected at this meet which has been a crowd puller from its inception.

The Sri Lanka Army and SLARDAR deserve a special credit conducting an event of this nature.
