RITES not interested in managing Lankan Railways

A spokesperson from the Indian High Commission said yesterday that the Indian company RITES was not interested in managing the Sri Lanka Railway service as reported in certain media recently.

Instead they have entered into an agreement with the Department several years back to repair unsafe and obsolete railway tracks and bridges to provide safe travel to commuters, the official said.

"The news reports and rumours that the RITES is going to take over the Railway service causing a heavy fare hike is misleading and false," the spokesperson told the Daily News.

Interior Minister on goodwill tour of Jaffna

Minister of Interior and Christian Affairs, John Amaratunga will undertake a goodwill tour of Jaffna on Sunday August 10. He will be accompanied by Secretary, Ministry Interior, IGP, ministry officials, Dr. Devaditya, Member of European Parliament and Advisor to the Prime Minister Wills Earle.

The Minister is due to visit the Jaffna Library, the Nallur Kovil, St. James Church, Jaffna, the Jaffna Prisons and Police. He is also due to hold discussions with religious dignitaries and prominent personalities in Jaffna.

Sadaham Charikawa begins

Sadaham Charikawa, A peace motorcade taking the sacred statue of Maradamadu Virgin Mary, blessed by the Pope from Colombo to the Vanni has been organised on the initiative of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugee Minister Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena.

This peace tour, participated by lay and clerical leaders of all religious denominations commenced its journey from Fatima Church, Deans Road, Maradana yesterday at 8.00 a.m. It will travel via Wattala, Ragama, Kandana, Raddoluwa, Katunayaka, Negombo, Kudapaduwa, Kattuwa, Kochchikade, Nainamadama, Wennappuwa, Katuneriya, Marawila, Kakkapalliya, Chilaw, Rajakadaluwa, Mundel, Puttalam, Karuwalagaswewa, Kala-oya, Nochchiyagama, Anuradhapura, Medawachchiya, Vavuniya, and Piramanakulam to reach its destination on August 14.

Strengthening the cause of the peace process initiated by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and fostering friendship and harmony among different ethnic groups in the country are the objectives of this peace procession, states the media communique.

Festival city in Jinthupitiya

To mark the Adivel festival of the Jayanthi Nagar Sri Sivasubramaniya Swami Hindu Temple in Jinthupitiya, Colombo 13, a festival city will be organised on August 11 and 12 for the first time under auspicious of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ministry.

The Velcart festival is one of the key Hindu religious events in Colombo and it will be celebrated this time with a view to further strengthen the relationships between communities living in the area through cultural and religious events.

The event will be feature cultural and popular entertainment as well as trade stalls, the release said.
