by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South Group Correspondent The first Randoli Perahera of the Kandy Esala Maha Perahera attracted large crowds on Thursday evening. People lined up the streets and were seated on the pavements from early afternoon and waited patiently for the glamorous pageant to pass by, along the scheduled routes. A notable feature was that the pageant was longer than the Kumbal Perahera and there were more elephants joined by the Devala Peraheras. A number of establishments along the routes of the Perahera, have put up temporary seating accommodation for people to view the Perahera, some for a payment while others for special invitees. Almost all the shops along the routes of the Perahera most of them two or more storied buildings said that requests had poured from friends and regular customers that they be permitted to view the Perahera from the establishments due to the streets being over crowded and the inability to stay put in one place for long hours. The police were very vigilant and were present in large numbers and stringent checks were carried out on people entering the routes of Perahera. It is not only the baggage but also persons are physically checked by policemen and police women wearing gloves. The Peoplised Bus Companies will operate special services up to the final day of the Randoli Perahera which is on Monday August 11 according to their schedules. There will be also special train service from the 9th to the 11th, with a special train leaving Colombo at 10.55 a.m. and this train will leave Kandy at 12.25 (mid night) after the Perahera. There will also be special train services to Nawalapitiya and Matale. |
