Emirates helps flood-affected children in Lanka Emirates SkyCargo will help relief efforts for victims of the recent floods in Sri Lanka. The award-winning cargo division of Dubai's international carrier this week transported, entirely free of charge, a consignment of clothes and toys collected by a group of musicians in Germany for children who lost their homes and belongings in the floods that ravaged parts of southern Sri Lanka. SkyCargo's assistance was made possible by contacts established last year, when Emirates sponsored the return travel of six musicians from Dusseldorf to Colombo to perform in a concert to raise funds for UNICEF projects. The concert was organised by the Country Music Foundation (CMF) of Sri Lanka, headed by Feizal Samath. Emirates Cargo Manager Sri Lanka and Maldives Damian Jayasuriya said that they were happy to respond to the CMF's request for help to transport the cargo collected in Germany for flood-affected children. "Emirates is very involved in children's welfare, and has set up the Emirates Airline Foundation, a non-profit charity organisation which aims to improve the lives of disadvantaged children around the world," he said. The collection of clothes and toys was co-ordinated by Dirk Maverick, the leader of the Mavericks band, which has performed at several charity concerts for children in Sri Lanka since the early 1990s. |
