Kingswood on the toss of a coin Kingswood College Kandy created a major upset when they beat Isipatana College on a toss of a coin in the Milo Schools President's trophy knock out rugby tournament quarterfinal match played at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. The scores were level 10 all at the end of the normal 60 minutes of play and even after extra time with both teams collecting their points from a goal and penalty. They were awarded with three penalty kicks and both teams converted one penalty each. Isipatana opened scoring in the seventh minute of play following a good penalty from Senthil Kumara. He had another chance of putting Isipatana in front but missed a penalty which was from kicking range few minutes later. Kingswood's reliable place kicker Eranga Weerakkody too had mixed fortunes as he fumbled with an easy penalty mid way in the first half. But the Kandy side was rewarded for their hard work as they scored a superb try through second row forward Gemunu Kirinda. Eranga Weerakkody made no mistake with the conversion and Kingswood had taken the lead 7-3. Both teams played a terrific game from there onwards with the hope of taking the initiative before half time. The Kingswoodians were successful in taking the lead at half time with Eranga Weerakkody firing across his second penalty to give them a 10 - 3 lead at the break. In the second half Isipatana came closer of scoring on more than a couple of occasions but they failed to add the finishing touches despite enjoying a major amount of possession. The Kingswoodians held on determinedly with a solid defence and occasionally counter attacking with their speedy three quarters. However Isipatana eventually touched down for the first time in the 26th minute of play with Senthil Kumara adding the extra points. (C.D) |
