Over 3 lakhs IDPs returned home, relocated or in transit - Prof. Jayalath Jayawardena

Based on the latest government estimates the Ministry of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees (MRRR) in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that from January 2002 upto and including June 2003 approximately 311,202 internally displaced persons (IDPS) have returned home, relocated elsewhere, or are in transit.

These figures are based on information gathered by Government Agents in each district and subsequently reported to the MRRR.

To-date information is available from the districts of Vavuniya, Mannar, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Jaffna, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Puttalam and all figures quoted are therefore based only on these districts.
