We must strengthen peace process - Minister Bakeer Markar

Thousands of lives were lost as a result of the ethnic conflict which plagued the country during the past 20 years. But, thanks to the Ceasefire Agreement and the subsequent Cessation of Hostilities, the war has stopped and there has been peace in the country over the past 18 months, said Minister of Mass Communication Imthiasz Bakeer Markar at the inauguration of construction work on the proposed stadium at Keselwatta, Panadura which is being done with the assistance of the State Engineering Corporation. Minister Bakeer Markar said, it is a great victory that we were able to bring the LTTE to the negotiation table. We have won the support of the international community who have given their blessings to the peace process.

We must endeavour to convert this tentative peace into a sustainable one, so that the future generations will stand to benefit. So, we must strengthen the peace process. The Minister said that the government has given priority to achieving peace and resuscitating the economy which was in shambles when the UNF government came into power. This has also gained the fullest support of the international community.

"It is the duty of public representatives to work for the benefit of the people and find solutions to their problems. That is the only way we will be able to find a lasting solution to the national problem. People of all communities should live in peace and harmony and make maximum use of the peaceful atmosphere prevalent in the country.

Mervyn J. Cooray, Chief UNP organiser of Panadura also addressed the meeting. Gamini Randeniya, Deputy Inspector General of Police and President of the Sri Lanka Football Association, A. Wickramanayake, Chairman of the State Engineering Corporation and A. M. M. Amras, Chairman of the Panadura Pradeshiya Sabha also participated.
