Kahawa special correspondent Southern province Development Authority (SPDA) has taken steps to distil wine, out of grape-vine cultivated in 70 acres of land in the Hambantota district, according to a spokesman from the SPDA."He said, that, the first stage of the program would be implemented utilizing small-scale machinery and, the large-scale machinery would be used later". "Vine farms in the district is a thorough success", he said. "Cultivation cost per acre stood at Rupees two and a half lakhs", he said. "We cultivated two varieties of grapes, namely, 'Cardinal' and 'Israel Blue" and both varieties were tolerable to climatic and soil condition of the district", he said. "It was an experimental proof", he said. "Fifteen kilos of grape may be plucked at a time after a three to four years from the planting, and it goes on for about 5 years", he revealed. SPDA, intention is to take traditional crop farmers beyond the margin, in order to indulge in new life lines of the sort acquiring economic richness among themselves and to help the government's efforts to usher in a sound economy to the country", he finally said. |
