The University of Moratuwa will be working in partnership with five other internationally recognised institutions in a project to develop a curriculum for 'Standardisation in Companies and Markets' under the Asia-Link programme. The main partner of this project is Universitat der Bundeswehr Hamburg (UniBwH), Germany and the other institutions are: * Eramus University of Rotterdam, The Netherlands * China Institute of Metrology, China * Hanoi National Economics University, Vietnam * Institute of Technology, Indonesia The project is scheduled to commence officially in January 2004. The above institutions will jointly prepare teaching units in the context of the standardisation curriculum. Members of academic staff of the University of Moratuwa (UOM) will be directly involved with this project and their main task would be to prepare four of the above-mentioned teaching units. They are also required to participate in training programmes and workshops to be held in Vietnam and Germany. There will be no financial commitment on the part of the University of Moratuwa in this connection as all the costs incurred during the course of the project will be borne by the UniBwH. A partnership agreement was drawn up recently between UniBwH and the UOM, which was represented by Dr. N. D. Gunawardena under the instructions of Professor Dayantha S. Wijeyesekera, Vice Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa. The benefits of this project include: * Installation of a web-based learning programme for the above teaching units by UniBwH with password-protected access for the staff and students of the University of Moratuwa, free of charge, for a period of 5 years. * The University will be given the right to use both the teaching units and the outcome of the project, free of charge, exclusively for teaching purposes. (It is expected to include these teaching units in the "Total Quality Management" course module offered by the Department of Management of Technology in its MBA programmes). * Possibility of getting the licences from UniBwH for the commercial exploitation of the outcome of the project. Although, there is no such commitment at present from the managers of this project, it is expected that this link with UniBwH and other institutions would, at a later stage, develop into a long-term project under the sponsorship of the Asia-Link programme and bring significant benefits to the University of Moratuwa in the future, states a Moratuwa University press release. |
