Negombo Special Correspondent A five year old dilapidated ward at the Negombo Base Hospital was renovated and refurbished for the paediatric ward and it was opened by the Western Provincial Council Health Minister Nandana Mendis on Saturday. Negombians now living in France who formed an association 'des Negombians de-Paris' provided financial assistance for the renovation of the children's ward. It was the brain-child of Ivan Seneviratne President of the Association. Two years ago the same association made a valuable contribution of French text books to the Negombo Municipal Council library for the benefit of students studying French in Negombo and in the Gampaha district. The French Ambassador in Sri Lanka graced the occasion, under the Mayorship of Ananda Munasinghe who is presently the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Korea. Provincial Health Minister Nandana Mendis said that the Negombo base hospital was the only government hospital in close proximity to the FTZ, the Bandaranaike International Airport and the Negombo tourist area. It also covers five electorates around the hospital area, he said. It is praiseworthy of Sri Lankans living abroad to think of their country and come forward to help their fellow citizens. Viharadhipathi of the Negombo Angurukaramulla Temple, Venerable Kondagamulle Gnanasiri Tissa Thera, Hospital chaplain Rev. Fr. Bertram Tirimanne (OMI), Rev. Sr. Marie Therese (Holy Angels) participated in the religious services to bless the ward. Dr. Linton Amarasiri (Deputy Provincial Director of Health Services, Gampaha), Dr. (Mrs.) Champika Wickramasinghe (Medical Superintendent, Negombo Base Hospital) also spoke. Raj Fernando proposed the vote of thanks. |
