by Sarath Malalasekera The four suspects who had been remanded in connection with the killing of PA Southern Provincial Council Minister M.K. Ranjith alias Chandi Malli were further remanded till August 13 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Sarath C. Karunaratne. Three of the four suspects were earlier produced before an identification parade held by Acting Colombo Fort Magistrate Jayantha Dias Nanayakkara. None of the prosecution witnesses identified the suspects produced before the parade. On an application by the Police the Judge directed the Prison authorities to produce the four suspects before Embilipitiya, Hambantota and Ambalangoda Magistrate Courts for identification parades on the due dates. Four special police teams were deployed earlier by the Colombo DIG on the directions of IGP T.E. Anandarajah to trace the killers of Southern Provincial Minister M.K. Ranjith. The Provincial Minister was shot dead by unidentified gunmen close to the High Security Zone at York Street, Colombo on May 25 morning. He was killed while returning after appearing before the CID on a court order. Southern Range DIG D.W. Prathapasinghe is directing investigations conducted by Director CCD Senior SP Sarath Lugoda, SP Gamini Dissanayake of the Legal Division and ASP Hettiarachchi. |
