Udatalawinna massacre :

 Relatives who identified victims' bodies testify

The relatives of the victims of the Udatalawinna massacre who had identified victims' bodies at the mortuary of the Kandy Hospital testified before the Trial-at-Bar hearing the Udatalawinna massacre when the hearings commenced in the High Courts of Colombo yesterday.

The Trial-at-Bar comprises High Courts Judges, Eric Basnayaka (president), Deepali Wijesundara and Sunil Rajapaksa.

Examined by the Additional Solicitor General Palitha Fernando, Abdul Ali Mohamed Thaufik of Madawala bazaar said that he identified the body of Mohamed Mirisan (23) at Kandy hospital mortuary.

Sakariya Mohamed Riyaz said that he identified his brother S. M. Rizvan's (28) body at Kandy hospital in the presence of the doctor who conducted the post-mortem on the body.

Riyaz Mohamed also of Madawala bazaar said that he identified the body of Mohamed Nazar (20) at the mortuary of Kandy hospital on December 2001. Mohamed Hameed Lebbe Casim said that he is a father of two and that he identified Safar Ahamed's body at the mortuary in Kandy hospital. He said that according to Muslim religious rites one's dead body should be buried within twenty four hours from the death and that Safar's body was buried in the mosque-yard of Madawala.

Abdul Malik Mohamed (54) of Madawala bazaar said that he identified the body of Mohamed Hanifa Rizvan (21) at the mortuary of Kandy hospital on December 6, 2001. Abdul Majeed Abdul Aziz said that he identified the body of Mohamed Rajid Mohamed Rashmin (26) at the hospital. Mohamed Iqbal (59) said that he identified Mohamed Ashwar's body and that Aswar was in a ash-coloured T-shirt.

Abdul Ali Mohamed Javali (55) said that he identified the body of his only son, Mohamed Fazir at the mortuary of Kandy hospital on December 6, 2001. Mohamed was in a black-red T-shirt and a trouser.

Counsel for the defence refrained from cross examining the witnesses. Further hearings resume on August 25, 2003.
