Maharagama special correspondent, Vehelle Piyathilaka "The traditional handicraft of a nation carries the fame, pride and history to the future generation. Traditional handicraft proclaim the culture of a country. Therefore it is the utmost duty of any government to safeguard, restore, and develop the handicrafts and uplift the craftsman. That is the aim of the new programme of the National Craft Council, said the Chairman of the National Crafts Council Dr. Buddhi Keerthisena addressing the inaugural meeting of the All-Island Provincial Handicraft Societies Federation recently held at the National Handicrafts Council, Janakala Kendra, Battaramulla. Chairperson of eight provincial organisations and their representatives participated at the meeting. He further said that the traditional handicrafts village culture which prevailed in the country was demolished and the craftsmen were also badly neglected during the British period. They imported everything from other countries. Our handicrafts were limited to remote rural areas. The motive of the government is to restore the traditional handicrafts by means of old handicraft village system. "For this purpose we need a strong organisation of handicraftsmen. their unity is urgently needed. During last few months we have instituted eight provincial organisations. Today we form the national level organisation to cooperate with the proposed project of the council." The delegates of the provincial organisations discussed at length the acute problems of the craftsman such as raw materials market facilities for the productions, lack of modern technology and equipment etc. The consultant of the council Mr. P. G. Ratnayake said, by the assistance of the Ministry of Tourism we have drafted a series of handicrafts exhibitions and sales centres in tourist hotels, Katunayake Airport and other commercial points in the future. |
