Japanese students thank PM

by Ananda Kannangara

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday welcomed three Japanese schoolchildren when they paid a courtesy call on him at Temple Trees to extend their heartfelt gratitude for giving them an opportunity to visit Sri Lanka during their school vacation.

The three students Haruka Mikuni, Yuna Nishida and Ryo Narita who are studying at TODA Junior High School in Yokohama, Japan visited Sri Lanka on Saturday with their teacher Yuka Sakuma and the Principal of the school, Masahika Watanabe on an invitation extended by Prime Minister Wickremesinghe during his recent tour in Hiroshima, Japan.

"This is a lifetime achievement for us to have visited your beautiful island and met the people during our short stay here," a student told a group of media men after their meeting with the Prime Minister. During their nine-day tour between August 2 and 10 the students are expected to visit several important and key landmarks in Sri Lanka including the Parliamentary complex at Sri Jayawardenepura, gifted by the Japanese Government two decades ago. The team will also make a special visit to Isipathana Vidyalaya, Colombo to meet students and also the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation where they will be featured in a live program for the benefit of school children.

Among the other important locations they expect to visit are the Lighthouse in Galle, Elephant Orphanage at Pinnawala and the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy. The visiting team will also be given an opportunity to see the historic Dalada Perahera.
