More J-Biz talks to create jobs in private sector The Joint Business Forum(J-Biz) will meet again on August 20 for further discussions on creating job opportunities in the private sector as requested by Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe. Though the J-Biz met last Friday to discuss the matter coupled with several other issues, it ended in a bitter turmoil after a heated argument over a 'three-page confidential document' of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) which resulted in failure to proceed with the discussion as scheduled, chamber sources said. More prominence will be given to discuss about proposals made by members on creating employment opportunities at the next J-Biz session to be chaired by the new President Mahendra Amarasuriya, the sources said. During the last meeting, Nihal Abeysekera former President of J-Biz handed over the forum to Amarasuriya, President of the International Chamber of Commerce. The Presidency of the J-Biz rotates annually and Abeysekera completed his tenure a couple of months ago. However, Abeysekera told the Daily News yesterday that at the next meeting chamber leaders are scheduled to discuss issues that need to be included in the set of proposals, which will be submitted to the premier. Abeysekera said that though J-Biz have received a few proposals from its members those are not substantial enough to be included in the report. J-Biz is also scheduled to address its members and brief them about its task of creating more job opportunities, he said. J-Biz comprises representatives of top chambers such as National Chamber of Exporters (NCE), Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FCCISL), Ceylon National Chamber of Industries (CNCI), International Chamber of Commerce (ICL) and Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC). The main focus on the J-Biz at present is preparing a strategy plan on creating employment opportunities in the private sector as requested by the Prime Minister during a discussion held with chamber leaders last month, where they agreed to present a set of proposals to the Premier within a month. - (CNK) |
