The Glaze of "Saints Touch Down"

by Supun Perera

Rugby Football is no doubt a game filled with a lot of excitement and many surprises. It is of course yet another game with glorious uncertainties taking place after an absorbing contest. At present the game has gone miles ahead and has taken many strides forward with regard to its development from school level.

The "Night Rugby" was best manifested amongst a large gathering under lights at Sri Lanka's "Twickenham" Longden place last Saturday when St. Joseph's College "locked horns" with their traditional rivals St. Peter's College. The slogan goes as "Saints Touch Down" and the motivation was the Rev. Fr. Basil Wiratunga memorial shield for the 35th year. Congratulations to Peterites for their hard fought win against the gallant Josephian outfit. It was no doubt a momentous victory for the Petes. Most of the time the spectator interest was at its best where the game was played at a tremendous pace where no quarter asked or given. Besides above the "Blue and White" Josephian senior band had the large gathering on their toes with some rythmetic entertainment.

Except for few infringements; the game was played according to the best of its traditions and thanks to referee D. Nimal who did a splendid job with the "Whistle". It was a heartwarming gesture by the host schools St. Joesph's whom donated a trophy for the under-13 encounter in memory of Rev. Fr. Noel Perera the "Doyen" of St. Joseph's College whose services expanded well over five decades for the Darley Road school. A big thank you to both the Rectors Rev. Fr. Victor Silva (St. Joseph's) and Rev. Fr. Felician Perera (St. Peter's) for their excellent "Support Play" by encouraging the respective organizing committees to make the event more innovative.

Evidence of which was seen to the full during the post match social and the fellowship dinner when the past ruggerites of both the colleges did kindle a measure of nostalgia along with the chief guest Hon. Lilantha Perera member of parliament who turned out for St. Joseph's as a full back from 1981 to 1982.

Finally man who stood firm against many ODDS should be complemented for a well done job. Kenneth De Zilva, the granite hard prop forward of St. Joseph's and later for CH and FC along with Dyan Navamani, Shyan Fernando, Manjula Rodrigo of the Josephian Rugby Advisory left no stone unturned and spared no pains to make the 35th "saints touch down" a great success.
