Isipatana have the edge over Thurstan

by Chris Dhambarage

Isipatana will he hoping to extend their dominance when they take on their traditional rivals Thurstan College in their annual Milo Schools rugby encounter played for the Abdul Jabbar Shield at Longden Place tomorrow.

Isipatana have dominated the series between the two schools in the past and this year too they are well set to pull off the game by a convincing margin. Isipatana have just completed the Milo Schools 'A' division league tournament where they were placed third in the points table behind the champions Royal and the runners up Wesley.

Isipatana collected a total of 16.50 points from their six outings with four victories to their credit.

They could be quite satisfied with their performances because they scored more tries (18) than any other side in the tournament. In addition their overall total of 138 points is the highest tally recorded in the Milo 'A' division league tournament.

In fact Isipatana were one of the strong contenders for the title at one stage after having made a promising start to the inter school rugby season. But their hopes were completely shattered following a shock 15-20 defeat at the hands of S. Anthony's College Kandy.

This was followed by another defeat at the hands of Royal by 8-19 and with that their chances of winning the league completely faded away.

Thurstan too have experienced mixed fortunes while competing in the Milo Schools 'B' division league tournament. They were placed fourth in the final points table behind the champions Kingswood College Kandy, Ananda and St. Joseph's. The Thurstanites had the credit of recording three good victories and collected a total of 12.50 points.

The Thurstanites also had the honour of winning the Gratian Goonawardana Trophy by defeating D. S. Senanayake College in their annual fixture last week. They certainly proved that they are capable of playing under pressure by recording a thrilling 15 points to 12 win over St. Sylvester's College Kandy in their previous outing played in Nittawela.

Isipatana are certain to rest a couple of players for this game because they have also qualified to compete in the Milo President's Trophy knockout tournament. Even then with their mobile pack and backed up by a speedy set of three quarters Isipatana are favoured to pull off the match by a convincing margin.
