SLPA men's Open Cycle Race sponsored by ANCL

Top racing riders in action

Some of the top racing riders will be vying for honours at the Sri Lanka Ports Authority open men's cycle race which will be worked off on Friday and Saturday from Colombo to Galle via Matara and back to Colombo.

This race is conducted by the Interim Committee for Cycling in Sri Lanka and organised by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority to commemorate their 24th anniversary and is sponsored by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL).

The three armed forces Sri Lanka Army SC, Navy SC, Air Force SC and Police SC will be fielding a large number of competitors in addition to some of the other top riders in the country. The more experienced Jude Krishantha and B.J.M. Sumanasekera are two of the favourites to win the race but they are certain to receive stiff opposition from a host of up and coming riders.

Already over 125 competitors have entered for the race and the organisers are hoping that the number of riders would top the 150 mark when they line up for the start on friday opposite the Light House Colombo Port at 7.00 a.m. The competitors will proceed along Galle Road, Mount Lavinia, Moratuwa, Kalutara, Ambalangoda, Galle, Matara and back to Galle covering a distance of 203.6 kilometres.

The second stage will commence on Saturday at 9.00 a.m. in front of the Galle Port and the riders will proceed along Ambalangoda, Kalutara, Moratuwa and reach Bambalapitiya through Galle Road. From Bambalapitiya, the riders will turn towards Thunmulla Junction, Borella, Baseline Road, Armour Street and will finish near the Jaya Terminal Gate of the Colombo Port at Hettiyawatte.

Meanwhile all managers of the riders are requested to be present for a meeting to be held on today at the Sri Lanka Ports Authority Sports Club at 5.00 p.m. The numbers and the technical guidelines will be presented to the riders at this meeting. (C.D.)
