Peace Games on Sunday at Sugathadasa Stadium

by Richard Dwight

What promises to be an elaborate sports festival in the name and cause of promoting inter-racial harmony, will be the 'Peace Games' scheduled for Sunday, August 3 at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

This laudable event, which has meaning and purpose in the current times we find ourselves in, is being organized by the concerted effort of Maharaja Television, Maharaja Broadcasting and the National lotteries Board.

Addressing the media at a briefing held at the Maharaja Auditorium on Monday the Director MTV/MBC Shiran Manakulasuriya said the sole objective of this exercise was to get people of different backgrounds to mingle and interact one with another so that they begin to understand and know each other in a better light.

And what better way than the medium of sport, to maintain and sustain this as an ongoing process in the greater cause and common good, questioned Shiran.

Endorsing the sentiments expressed, was the Executive Director of the National Lotteries Board, Mohan Wijesinghe, who said that we must go even further ahead to foster concord and amity amongst people, not only through sport, but as well through culture and the arts, recalling that members of Sirasa and Shakthi went in the pursuit of this to Jaffna and concluded by saying that this display of cultural exchange must be extended to other districts too.

The Assistant Sports Director, Ministry of Sports, Derwin Perera giving details of the Peace Games said the opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at 1.50 pm on Sunday August 3 and close around 6.40 pm with the awards ceremony.

There will be team competitions in seven-a-side soccer, netball and Kabaddi for men and women - the teams involved for soccer are Renown SC, Jupiter SC, Blue Star SC and Java Lane, whilst in netball the teams will comprise Hatton National Bank, Ports Authority, the Air Force and the Galle District.

The teams drawn up in the men's kabaddi are the Air Force, Army, Navy and the Galle District - and for womens kabaddi, it will be the Air Force, Navy, Polgasowita Kapila SC and the Ratnapura District.

In the field of Altheltics there will be the road race on the Negombo Road from Wattala, 10 km for men and 5 km for women, with a 5000 m run for men too. The other events for men would be the jumps, the pole vault, high and long-the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m track races, along with the 110m and 400m hurdles.

The womens contests will be 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, the 110m and 400m hurdles. This apart there will be 4x100m relay for girls' schools and 4x400m relay for Boys' school with an event or two for inter-university. (Some of the special events will carry lavish cash awards, whilst trophies and souvenirs along with certificates will be presented to the others.
