Nothing done by LTTE to remove Wan-Ela camp - Nordic monitors

by Ranil Wijayapala

The Nordic truce monitors who visited the Wan-Ela camp, in Kinniya yesterday confirmed that nothing has been done by the LTTE to remove the camp from the location, Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission spokeswoman Agnes Bragadottir told the Daily News yesterday.

"Two monitors from Trincomalee visited the camp yesterday and they observed that nothing has been done to remove the camp", Bragadottir added.

"So far Thamilselvan has not conveyed any message to the SLMM about the dismantling of the camp", she said.

However, the SLMM is optimistic that the LTTE will respond positively to the Head of Mission's letter to Thamilselvan urging them to reconsider their stance over the Wan-Ela camp.

Hagrup Haukland who is acting as the Head of Mission in the absence of Tryggve Tellefsen is expecting to raise this issue again with the LTTE in the coming week if there is no response from the LTTE within this week.

General Tryggve Tellefsen who is now in Norway on a private visit will also raise this issue with the Norwegian facilitators.

LTTE sources in the Wanni told the Daily News that Thamilselvan is most unlikely to respond to the SLMM within this week since he is busy addressing the area leaders in the East. He is expected to visit Trincomalee too during this week long visit to East, the first official visit to the East by Thamilselvan after the signing of the Ceasefire Agreement. "He is willing to visit the camp in Kurankupanchan camp during his visit to Trincomalee but it is not yet confirmed", an LTTE spokesman in Killinochchi said.
