Programme of the Kandy Esala Perahera - 2003

On Tuesday 29th July 2003 at 5.45 a.m. the Kap was erected at the four Devales in Kandy facing East and the Perahera will be conducted within the Devale precincts until 1st August. From 2nd August 2003 to 12th August 2003 the Perahera will be conducted along the Streets of Kandy as mentioned below states Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Niranjan Wijeyeratne -

Kumbal Perahera

Saturday 02nd August - After nightfall the Perahera of the four Devales will start at 6.52 p.m. facing North and will come up according to customs to the main gate of the Sri Dalada Maligawa and from the Dalada Maligawa at 7.27 p.m. facing South the full Perahera will proceed along Dalada Veediya, D. S. Senanayake Veediya, Pansal Para, Deva Veediya, Raja Veediya and return to the Dalada Maligawa along Maligawa Chaturasraya.

Sunday 03rd August - The Perahera will start from the Dalada Maligawa at 7.29 p.m. facing East and proceed along Dalada Veediya, D. S. Senanayake Veediya, Pansal Para, Deva Veediya, Srimath Bennet Soysa Veediya, D. S. Senanayake Veediya, Raja Veediya and return to the Dalada Maligawa along Maligawa Chaturasraya.

Monday 04th August - The Perahera will start from the Dalada Maligawa at 8.05 p.m. facing East and proceed along Dalada Veediya, D. S. Senanayake Veediya, Srimath Bennet Soysa Veediya, Kotugodelle Veediya, Raja Veediya and return to the Dalada Maligawa along Maligawa Chaturasraya.

Tuesday 05th August - The Perahera will

Start from the Dalada Maligawa at 7.17 p.m. facing East and proceed along Dalada Veediya, Kotugodella Veediya, Raja Veediya and return to the Dalada Maligawa along Maligawa Chaturasraya.

Wednesday 06th August - The Perahera will start from the Dalada Maligawa at 7.41 p.m. facing North and proceed along Dalada Veediya, Yatinuwara Veediya, Raja Veediya and return to the Dalada Maligawa along Maligawa Chaturasraya. Randoli Perahera

Thursday 07th August - Randoli will be taken from the Devalas at 8.35 p. m. facing North and the Devala Peraheras will come up to the Dalada Maligawa and at 8.39 p.m. facing North join the Dalada Maligawa Perahera to proceed along Dalada Veediya, D. S. Senanayake Veediya, Srimath Bennet Soysa Veediya, Kotugodella Veediya, Raja Veediya and return to the Dalada Maligawa along Maligawa Chaturasraya.

Friday 8th August - The Perahera will start from the Dalada Maligawa at 8.41 p.m. facing East and proceed along Dalada Veediya, D. S. Senanayake Veediya, Srimath Bennet Soysa Veediya, Kotugodelle Veediya, Raja Veediya and return to the Dalada Maligawa along Maligawa Chaturasraya.

Saturday 9th August - The Perahera will start from the Dalada Maligawa at 8.29 p.m. facing North and proceed along Dalada Veediya, Kotugodelle Veediya, Kumara Veediya, Yatinuwara Veediya, Haras Veediya, D. S. Senanayake Veediya, Raja Veediya and return to the Dalada Maligawa along Maligawa Chaturasraya.

Sunday 10th August - The Perahera will start from the Dalada Maligawa at 7.20 p.m. facing South and proceed along Dalada Veediya, Kotugodelle Veediya, Srimath Bennet Soysa Veediya, Yatinuwara Veediya, Raja Veediya, Kotugodelle Veediya, Kande Veediya, D. S. Senanayake Veediya, Raja Veediya and return to the Dalada Maligawa along Maligawa Chaturasraya.

Monday 11th August - The Perahera will start from the Dalada Maligawa at 9.05 p.m. facing North and proceed along Dalada Veediya, Yatinuwara Veediya, Kande Veediya, D. S. Senanayake Veediya, Raja Veediya and return to the Dalada Maligawa along Maligawa Chaturasraya.

The same night the Devale Peraheras will join the Dalada Maligawa Perahera at 1.48 a.m. Saturday 12th August 2003 and facing North will proceed along Dalada Veediya, D. S. Senanayake Veediya to the Gedige Viharaya and after depositing the Sacred Relic Casket there, will return to Devales. The Devala Peraheras will then, before dawn, on 12th August, 2003 proceed along Peradeniya Road to the Getambe Thota for the Water Cutting (Diya Kapana) Mangallaya. Thereafter the Devala Peraheras will return along the same road to the Ganadevi Kovila, Katukelle, where the customary ceremonies will be performed.

Day Perahera

Tuesday 12th August - The Devala Peraheras will start from the Ganadevi Kovil at 01.03 p.m. facing East and proceed along Katukelle Para, Dalada Veediya, Kotugodella Veediya, Kande Veediya and at the D. S. Senanayake Veediya, join the Sri Dalada Maligawa Perahera which will start at 1.33 p.m. facing West from the Gedige Viharaya and proceed along D. S. Senanayake Veediya, Pansala Para, Deva Veediya, Raja Veediya and circle round the Maligawa Chaturasraya three times before returning to the respective Devales. The auspicious time for depositing the Sacred Relics is 4.53 p.m. on Tuesday 12th August 2003.
