by Manjula Fernando A recent survey carried out by the Education Ministry has revealed that over one third of the country's school principals did not possess the required qualifications for the job. There are currently 9,876 schools but principals in 3,000 of them are found to be well below par for the post, the survey revealed. Education Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku said these ad-hoc appointments have hindered the efforts towards improving the standard of state sector schools, especially the rural schools, up to the level of the few existing popular schools. But, he said, the Ministry has been prevented from any action since these appointments have been made under the label of 'politically victimized. According to the Minister, most of these principals are from the schools under the Provincial Councils except for some 27 which are national schools coming under the purview of the Ministry. Dr. Kodituwakku said he would take whatever measures required to rectify the issue within the next year in order to provide equal educational opportunities for all schoolchildren. There are a total of 9,876 schools in the country out of which 326 are national schools governed by the Education Ministry. |
