by M.S.M. Mazahim, Ukuwela Special Corr. It is our desire to develop the city of Matale within a period of three years. We propose to give priority to urgent development works in all Municipal Wards of Matale. We also hope to identify any shortcomings and have them completed within this period of three years. This view was expressed by Miss. Jennifer Ferguson, Project Manager of the International Centre for Sustainable Cities in Vancouver, Canada during her address to Matale Municipal Councillors recently. According to Miss. Ferguson prominence will be given to the development programmes in Matale under the assistance and guidance of ICSC officials who will take a very special interest in the development of the city of Matale. Miss. Ferguson during the course of her address disclosed the fact that the Mayor of Matale Mohamed Hilmy during his recent visit to Vancouver, Canada expressed his desire to improve the city of Matale and requested the assistance of the ICSC in the development of the Green City Programme for Matale. Therefore having accepted his invitation we have come to Sri Lanka and visited the city of Matale to assist him in this project. Today we have visited several areas within the city of Matale and made our observations. During our visit the Mayor and the City Councillors who participated expressed their views and pointed out the shortcomings to be completed by our organization. I am happy to state that for the first part of our proposed project we intend to commence at the M.C. Road. From here we will move on to the Kaludewala, Dole Road, Vihara Road and Harasgama Areas, in continuation of our project. We have drawn up a tentative three year plan for the Matale Green City Project development. For the first stage of development the estimated cost would be around Rs. 10 million. The main purpose in our implementing this programme of Green City Development is to solve the various problems of environment within the city of Matale. The ICSC is also very interested in making the city of Matale clean and beautiful by providing every assistance to the house holders in all the Municipal wards to develop and cultivate their home plots, improve their flower gardens and landscaping and at the same time to encourage the house holders in self-employment projects. At this conference presided over by the Mayor, the following Municipal Councillors participated during the discussions. V.G. Jinadasa, Deputy Mayor, Mrs. Sumana Wijeratne, Project Manager (Sri Lanka - ICSC) I.K. Maithreepala, Meththananda Fernando, Palitha Jayasekera, R.M. Zafarullah, R. Wijayakumar. The following officials were also present and participated in the days programme: B.C.R. Baba Pajohn, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Dr. G.T. Bertinus, MOH, Matale Municipal Council and Enoon, President, Rotary Club of Matale. |
