by Nadira Gunatilleke Reconstruction of damaged houses due to the recent floods and landslides is currently in progress. Arrangements have already been made to complete foundations of 585 houses, Social Welfare Ministry Secretary Ms. Vijayalakshmi Jegarasasingam said. She said that brick work on 18 houses and roofing of two houses had also been completed. Rs 61,670,000 was spent on the first stage of reconstructing damaged houses. Rs.154.750 has been allocated to implement reconstruction work of the first stage. Still people living in areas that are prone to landslides have been identified as high risk areas. People do not like to evacuate themselves from their ancestral homes and this is one of the major problems surface during relocating process. The number of fully damaged houses is 8317 and the highest number of fully damaged houses has been reported from the Ratnapura district, which is 3597. The number of partly damaged houses is 20589 and the highest number of partly damaged houses reported from the Ratnapura district is 8683. |
