New promotions scheme for Samurdhi officials

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The Treasury has approved a new promotions scheme formulated by the Samurdhi Ministry to grant annual salary increments to Samurdhi Development Officers (SDOs) and Samurdhi Managers from January next year. This will be in addition to incentives for these officers for excellent performance.

"In future all promotions and salary increments will be granted to only those SDOs and Samurdhi Managers with a good performance record in their work based on the new Performance Evaluation Method introduced by the Ministry," Samurdhi Director General Dr.Sunil Jayantha Nawaratne told the Daily News yesterday adding that the scheme would be devoid of politics.

According to this performance evaluation method, the Sri Lanka Samurdhi Authority (SLSA) will look into the performance of 24,000 Samurdhi Development Officers and 2,050 Samurdhi Managers attached to 1024 Samurdhi Bank Societies set up to uplift the socio-economic conditions of 1.8 million Samurdhi beneficiary families.

Meanwhile, the SLSA will also grant a Rs.200,000 housing loan to SDOs and Samurdhi Managers following their progress under this new performance evaluation method.

In addition, Agriculture, Livestock and Samurdhi Minister S.B.Dissanayake is considering the possibility of granting two increments to SDOs and Samurdhi Managers who have shown the best performances in their work, he said. Dr.Nawaratne said this is the first time this kind of performance evaluation scheme has been introduced by the Agriculture, Livestock and Samurdhi Ministry to upgrade the skills of Ministry employees by granting them promotions, salary increments and other facilities.

Already, the SLSA has instructed all SDOs and Samurdhi Managers to submit their performance evaluation reports for the past three months of April, May and June. "Samurdhi officials are now submitting their reports," he said.

Minister S.B.Dissanayake has decided to offer 30 scholarships to the best SDOs and Samurdhi Managers who attain the highest performance levels in their work. These 30 Samurdhi officials will be given a special training at "Bank Rakyat", one of the leading micro finance institutions in Indonesia.

Arrangements have also been made to select the best SDO, Samurdhi Manager, Divisional Secretary and District Secretary at divisional, district and national level. They will receive scholarships and felicitation awards, he said.

Meanwhile, the Samurdhi Ministry has taken steps to offer awards to the country's best Samurdhi Bank, Samurdhi Maha Sangamaya and Samurdhi projects implemented in marketing, industries and infrastructure sectors.

In addition, a Samurdhi Felicitation Ceremony will be held at the end of this year to offer felicitation awards to SDOs and Samurdhi Managers to appreciate their services.
