75% increase in Indian participation at Trade Fair

by Shirajiv Sirimane

The Indian participation for the fifth annual India Trade Fair (ITF) which will be held from August 8 to 12 at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre (SLECC) has increased by over 75%.

According to the Co-ordinator Kontax Exhibitions and Fairs of Chennai India, V. Raman, the ongoing peace process and the improved political and economic situation in the country has attributed for this increased number of Indian businessmen. He said that last year they had 80 Indian stalls and this year they have over 120 and this is the highest participation ever for this event in their five-year history. Raman said that the FTA between India and Sri Lanka too has helped to increase the participation for the event.

He said that the Indian companies have realised that the Sri Lankans purchasing power has increased.

'"Due to this factor we have also decided to conduct a similar event in Kandy next year and is also exploring the possibility to organise an event in the North East."

He said that the items traded at the exhibition are all Made in India products and the range includes industrial and trade related machinery, automobile components and spares, pharmaceuticals, handicrafts, office equipment, engineering products, computer and Education solutions, building material, agricultural products and consumer products.

He said that the product range too has increased this year.

"The exhibition will also facilitate technology transfers, signing of joint ventures and also identifying new dealers and retailers. "ITF would be a boon to Sri Lankan small and medium scale entrepreneurs."

The Trade Fair which is endorsed by the Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Industrial Development, BOI and Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry was first held in 1999.

The ITF is organised in Sri Lanka by SLECC, a subsidiary of Pico Group of Singapore is incorporated under the approval of the BOI.
