Kidney Transplant Upali for world games

D. L. W. Upali a 51 year old Kidney Transplanted patient (in 1985) is an active security guard in the Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka in Colombo. He hails from Wannathamulla, is married and has one child.

He has been a follow up patient of Professor Rezvi Sheriff and maintained an excellent health and had been athletic all his life.

He represented Sri Lanka at the Transplant Olympics in 1992 in Sydney, stadium and was ranked 4th in the world for cricket ball throw.

In 1996 he won 5 Gold Medals in Amristrar, India at the SAARC Games. The other two team members were not placed at the heats.

At the Sri Lanka National Games held in 2000 by the Sports Ministry he was placed first in the Veteran group athletic events.

The Sri Lankan Transplant Sports Federation has been formed with Professor Rezvi Sheriff as the President and Dr. Geethanjan Mendis and Dr. Shiromi Pilapitiya as Vice President, Wijaya Ransi Secretary and Mrs. Amitha Kathriarachchi is the Treasurer. They are awaiting formal affiliation with the Ministry of Sports.

This year the World Transplant Games is being held in Nancy in France and it was postponed due to the SARS epidemic and arrangements will be made later. Professor Sheriff has obtained funding for one Athlete Upali who was the obvious choice because of his previous performance. He is being jointly sponsored by Western Infirmary (Pvt) Ltd, and the Lions Clubs in Nancy, France through the World Transplant Games organization.

The Sri Lanka Kidney transplant Sports Federation have also helped with incidental expenses.

He will compete with athletes from all parts of the world and with recipients of Kidney, Liver, Heart transplants.

The Transplant Community is very proud of Upali and wish him Good Luck. He left for the games on Friday 19th to 27th. He will take part in the following events which will be held from July 20-27.

Track and Field 100m, Track and Field 200m, Track and Field 400m, Ball throw, Long jump.
