DSS trash STC to retain U-17 Cager title Defending champions and Colombo North Zonal champions, D. S. Senanayake College, Colombo emerged champions at the all-island U-17 basketball championship, which was worked off recently at D. S. S. courts. In the all island finals D. S. Senanayake massacred S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia 90-64. Throughout the game D. S. S. dominated the match with their excellent playing skills and tactics. A very powerful beginning by D. S. led them to a comprehensive lead of 54-34 at half time. They maintained their aggressive style which paved them the path to an easy victory. Vibhavi Alkegama of D. S. Senanayake College was adjudged the "Most Valuable Player" for his immense contribution of 32 points while Nipuna Hettiarachchi also from D. S. Senanayake who excelled in defense was adjudged "Best Defensive Player" of the tournament. M. Deen who scored 20 points for the losers was awarded the "Best Offensive Player" Trophy. D. S. Senanayake had an easy round of matches in the first round beating Trinity College 96-35, Richmond College 94-51 and St. Anne's 68-54. D. S. S. went on to trash British School 85-62 in the quarterfinal and cruise through to the final by beating Ananda College comprehensively 70-44 in the semi finals. Earlier D. S. S. emerged the Colombo North Zonal U-17 basketball champions as well which was played at CIS courts. D. S. S. beat Colombo International School in the final by 84-60. Nipuna Hettiarachchi and Buddhika Wijesundera of D. S. S. who played brilliantly were selected as the "Most Valuable Player" and the "Best Offensive Player" of the tournament respectively. |
