Lankan netballers finish 11th Sunil Abeyawardana from Jamaica KINGSTON. Jamaica, Sri Lanka completed a successful tournament at the 11th World netball championships where they finished in the 17th place out of 24 teams at the Jamaica indoor stadium in Kingston. Sri Lanka defeated Antigua by 63 goals to 59 in their final outing having earlier beaten the Cayman Islands twice, Graneda and losing to St. Vincent and Samoa respectively. This was an improved performance considering the fact that the Lankan team was ranked number 21 before the start of the tournament. Sri Lanka were up against it from the very first match of the tournament and were always performing under pressure. The opposition was quite strong in every game and the girls really had to come out with an extra effort to make a match of it. Sri Lanka could have won one more game had their shots been more accurate against St. Vincent. Sri Lanka's excellent performances in this tournament came in for high praise from the controlling body and other officials of the World Netball Federation. They received good support from the Sri Lankan expatriates in Jamaica who even skipped their office work to come out and witness the matches. |
