Havies force a draw with CH Havelocks Sports Club staged a magnificent fight back to force a thrilling 25 all draw in their Caltex inter club 'A' division league rugby tournament second round match played at Havelock Park yesterday. Both teams collected their points from one goal, three tries and one penalty but CH and FC led 15-3 at half time. In fact the Havies could have even pulled off the game had Jiffrey Saeed made the conversion after Lalindra Rodrigo had scored a spectacular try during injury time.
Even then this was a fantastic comeback by the home side who were trailing 3-22 shortly after half time. CH and FC took the initiative and set the pace for a convincing victory with their forwards and the three quarters forming a superb combination. They enjoyed a major amount of possession and were heading towards an easy win after their early burst. Flanker Rakata led the way with a powerful performance scoring twice as CH and FC fully exploited the opposition during the first half of the game. Centre Alex Taliea, full back Dinuk de S. Wijeratne and Dilanka Wijesekera also scored a try each for the CH and FC team. In addition Nalin Dissanayake converted one try and put over a penalty. Havelocks SC proved their class during the latter stages of the game with winger Lalindra Rodrigo scoring a decisive try during the injury time. This was after Joseph Waqa, Alex Taka and C. Amarasinghe had touched down one try each for the Park Club. But Jiffrey Saeed's kick went astray during the important conversion having earlier goaled one try and put over a penalty. (D.W.) |
