Kandy scrape through 24-20 by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy sports corr. Defending League Champions table leader Kandy Sports Club had to fight all the way before over coming CR and FC by 24 points (2 goals, 2 tries) to 20 (1 goal, 2 tries, 1 penalty) in their Caltex League 'A' Division rugby tournament match played at Nittawela yesterday. At half time Kandy led 12-10. Overall Kandy cannot be impressed with their performance, though enjoying an abundance of possession in the line outs through some good jumping by lock forwards Neranjan Ranasinghe and Pradeep Basnayake. Kandy had to wait till the 15th minute to open their scoring when they moved the ball to the left flank and centre Indrajith Bandaranayake went over by the left corner flag. Full back Nalaka Weerakoddy failed to add the extra points Kandy 5-0. But the red shirts equalised in the 20th minute when they won a line out inside Kandy territory and from the ensuing maul centre Haren Kaluarachchi scored mid right. CR & FC 5-5. But Kandy wrested the lead in the 25th minute by No. 8 Laga Tulagege taking the short tap scored by the posts and full back Nalaka Weerakoddy added the extra points. Kandy 12-5. Just before CR's threes pierced through an unalert Kandy defence and winger Kishan Musafer dived over. Roshan Peiris failed to add the extra points. CR & FC 10-12. But the turnaround saw the red shirts playing a better game and enjoying more possession both in the line outs and the loose. Kandy countered this by bringing Asoka Jayasena to the second row replacing Neranjan Ranasinghe. CR and FC went into the lead for the first time in the match when their Fijian flanker Lotena Nagei knocked over a 40 metre penalty, CR 13-12. Chamara Withanage who replaced Ifeta Temo as centre met with immediate success when he breezed his way to plant a try which went unconverted. Kandy scored again in the 30th minute when winger Pradeep Liyanage crashed over by the corner flag to plant a brilliant try but injured himself. In the dying stages of the game CR's prop Chaminda Siriwardena scored by the left post and Roshan Peiris added the extra point. Shamrath Fernando refereed. |
