Govt's aim to take computer science to villages - Minister Rambukwella

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South Group Correspondent

"It is the objective of the present government to take computer science to all parts of the country including the remote villages as a part of improving the computer literacy rate, said the Minister of Science and Technology and Kandy District MP Kheliya Rambukwella.

He made this observations when he addressed the annual prize giving of Kingswood College, Kandy.

Minister Rambukwella said that though we enjoy a very high literacy rate which is the highest in the region but the same cannot be said of computer literacy as we are lagging behind while India is far ahead of even the developed countries.

India is so advanced that even boutiques have computer and interest facilities in the villages through which the people attend to many things which they would have otherwise done by personally visiting those offices.

He also said where computer technology and Information Technology is concerned Kingswood College have not only taken the lead ahead of other schools but also in the forefront by having a well-equipped computer section which should serve as an example to other schools.

He paid a tribute to the present Principal Ranjith Chandrasekera for the interest taken by setting up this Computer Centre from which the students will benefit immensely by not having to pay to learn computer science.

The Minister also said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe assigned him the Ministry of Science and Technology under which falls the Computer and Information Technology and one of his tasks is to develop the knowledge and spread computer science to schools.

Many new schools have been provided with computer rooms and more schools will be equipped with computers so that they will have access to a vast knowledge and information with the press of a button. Time is an important fact and unlike in the past, the present day children have to meet a lot of challenges and cannot afford to waste time. He also said that when politicians come for school functions, they make various promises. Sometimes these promises are fulfilled and at times not. He said he will do his best to provide assistance to Kingswood College whenever there is an opportunity.

In conclusion he said that the country is marching towards peace whilst maintaining its status as a unitary state.

There is a lot to be done and it is time for all political leaders and others to sink their differences and march towards a common goal of achieving permanent peace which is the ultimate objective of the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Principal of Kingswood College Ranjith Chandrasekera said that since the last prize-giving the school has undergone vast changes, thanks to the staff, parents and old boys who have rallied round him and have been a tower of strength.

Kingswood's Prologue was read by V. K. Perera and the Vote of Thanks by Dr. S. S. D. Herath (on behalf of the old boys). W. D. Nathavitharne, Senior Prefect spoke on behalf of the college.
