B. E. Fernando felicitated

B. E. Fernando was felicitated by the YMCAs recently. He is not only an outstanding leader of the YMCA movement but also of the Christian community in Sri Lanka.

Fernando graduated from the University of London as a Double Honours Science Graduate and thereafter joined the public service of our country. Serving with the Inland Revenue Department. He retired from public service in 1973 as the head of the Department of Inland Revenue, one of the most prestigious posts in the public service of our country. During his period of service as a public servant and after retirement Mr. Fernando has been involved in a wide spectrum of Christian mission and ministry activity both at global and national level making an outstanding contribution not only at meetings but also through various papers read at many international conferences and seminars.

Referring to his activities with the YMCA movement he served as a member of the Board of the Colombo YMCA from 1953-1973. He served as the President of our National Council from 1968-1973 and was also associated as the Vice President thereafter from 1976-1978. Mr. Fernando also had the distinction of being a member of the World Alliance executive committee from 1969-1973. For his distinguished services to our movement Mr. Fernando was elected this year as the patron of the National Council.

As stated earlier, Fernando has been involved not only in the YMCA activities but also in a wide spectrum of Christian activities both at the national and global level. He was a Director of World Vision International both in Bangladesh and in Sri Lanka. He served as the president of the Evangelical Alliance, Colombo Gideons and Scripture Union and was a Vice President of the Methodist Conference and the National Christian Council.

Mr. Fernando also served the Bible cause with exemplary devotion and zeal and was the President of the General Council of the Ceylon Bible Society for many years.

I have had the privilege of working with Fernando both in the YMCA movement and the Bible Society. He brought to his work a meticulous flair for detail and incisive understanding of men and matters, a razor sharp intellect coupled with a deep and abiding faith in the mission of the Christian church.

It is indeed fitting that we honour him today - an outstanding leader of the YMCA movement!
