The Samurdhi poverty alleviation movement which until now was implemented through Government funds will hereafter be supported by the private sector as well. The Ministry of Samurdhi has initiated this new project which will be implemented by the Sri Lanka Samurdhi Authority. In the first stage of this project Cargills Ltd. will join hands with the Samurdhi Authority in opening ice cream sales centres in cities throughout the country. Two youths who are Samurdhi recipients will be selected from every district and entrusted responsibility of running these centres. The Samurdhi recipients who enter into this project will ultimately be owners of successful business ventures with the chance of winning a deep freezer and a three-wheeler worth Rs. 300,000. People's Leasing Ltd. has agreed to give leasing facilities to the Samurdhi recipients with an initial payment of Rs. 25,000 by the recipients. Meanwhile David Peiris Ltd. has entered into special agreements to supply three-wheelers. In the second stage of the project, a milk distribution scheme with Milco Ltd. is in the offing while a vehicle hiring scheme is to be initiated in the third stage. Furthermore, a home services scheme under which masons and electricians could be hired and a Samurdhi courier service to distribute letters between the main cities and 2000 three-wheelers to be distributed among Samurdhi recipients, are the other anticipated schemes.Apart from this, improving the living standard of 10,000 Samurdhi recipient families is another scheme that will be initiated. |
