Caltex to help re build Deniyaya District Hospital affected by floods

Caltex Lubricants Lanka Limited has stepped forward in assisting with the rebuilding of the Deniyaya District Hospital. The company's Managing Director Kishu Gomes met Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya to hand over a cheque for Rs. 2.5 m to be utilized in the re building efforts of the Deniyaya District Hospital yesterday. Deputy Minister Sagala Ratnayake was also present at the presentation ceremony.

The 17th of May saw the worst ever-flash floods that had hit Sri Lanka in 56 years. The flash floods killed more than a hundred people while some 700 to 800 were reported missing and at least 150,000 people left homeless in the South Western region of the country. Re building a nation affected by a natural disaster was a daunting task for the government.

Depty. Minister Ratnayake said "that the Deniyaya hospital was originally built in the 1800s and had lasted over 200 years till the landslide swept part of the hospital away. The relocation of the hospital to a new area more convenient and easily accessible has been identified whilst the necessary approval to the land has been cleared by the NRB".

Caltex as a socially responsible corporate citizen has always acted in honouring our commitment towards the environment, society and community at large. "When the devastation of Floods hit Sri Lanka our employees contributed a day's pay towards purchase of school books to the affected children in the Deniyaya electorate. Hence we felt it would be right even if the corporate contributed as well. The monies will be put to good use in constructing a Caltex Intensive Care Unit for the Deniyaya District Hospital. This way we know we can be much closer to the hearts of the people", said Kishu Gomes MD of Caltex. He further stated that Caltex has won the National Environment award for 3 consecutive years since year 2000 and has also contributed Rs. 9 Million towards the uplift of the educational standards being improved among 19 Deaf and Blind Schools situated around the country during this year and next year. Already 12 schools have received the benefit of the project with equipment such as computers, brail machines, fax machines, hearing aids, soundproof rooms, buildings etc. being donated and constructed for the benefit of the children.

Minister Jayasuriya thanked Caltex on behalf of the government and went on to state that "as much as you have made money your company has not forgotten your social responsibility. This is quite evident in the awards your company has won for environment and also being one of the largest contributors in uplifting the standards of the Deaf and Blind schools in Sri Lanka". He thanked the employees and the management of Caltex Lubricants Lanka Limited for coming forward in selecting to rebuild the Deniyaya District Hospital and stated that the money will be directed in the reconstruction work of the project.
