by Asela Kuruluwansa The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd (ANCL) has donated Rs. 600,000 for the Kandy Esala Festival to illuminate the Sri Dalada Maligawa and the four devales and to give away prizes to the artistes participating in the Perahera. The cheque was handed over to Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyaratne and to the Basnayaka Nilames of the four Devalas, by ANCL Chairman Nalin Ladduwahetty on Saturday (July 19) at the Sri Dalada Maligawa. Earlier the ANCL donated Rs. 250,000 to the Sri Dalada Maligawa but this time the Maligawa received Rs. 400,000 while Rs. 50,000 was donated to each of the four devales for the first time. The Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyaratne appreciated highly the assistance given by the ANCL to the Sri Dalada Maligawa. The Basnayaka Nilame of Natha Devale R. M. Navaratne said that a large sum of money is needed for the Devale Perahera and thanked ANCL for the donation. ANCL Chairman Nalin Ladduwahetty said that D. R. Wijewardene starting the institution has stated that the ANCL should play a leading role in Buddhist festivals and activities. But in the recent past that was neglected. The Chairman said that his motive is to fulfil that expectation of D. R. Wijewardene. He further stated that the ANCL donated Rs. 11.8 m for Buddhist affairs last year. Mr. Ladduwahetty visited Malwatte and Asgiriya Vihares and met the two Maha Nayaka Theras who blessed him. Here the Chairman presented the Maha Nayaka Theras a report showing the details of donations for Buddhist affairs by the ANCL last year. Basnayake Nilames of the Vishnu Devale Mohan Panabokke, Kataragama Devale Ranjith Ellegala, Pathini Devale Rohan Paranagama, ANCL Working Director, D. K. Somasiri, General Manager B. A. Jinadasa and Secretary Kumudu Imbulamure participated. |
