News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | New Sports Bill ready by August - PM by Jayantha Sri Nissanka, Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday told the Parliament that a new Sports Bill will be presented in the House aimed at improving the country's sports sector. "The new Sports Bill is being drafted and will be ready by August," he said. The premier was responding to an oral question raised by PA member Ronnie de Mel as to whether a Cricket Academy will be established with special provision for outstation cricketers with residential and indoor facilities. Premier Wickremesinghe responding to him said that the first phase of the Cricket Academy has already been inaugurated by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka on May 25, 2003. Ronnie de Mel also asked whether the new academy will be named as the "Muttiah Muralitharan Cricket Academy and Training Centre" to honour this great cricketer. Premier responding said that the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will be informed to forward this proposal to the Board of Control for Cricket for its consideration. Responding to another question raised by opposition member Ronnie de Mel whether Premier can consider taking this project under his wings for a short period, said "I recognise the need for development, but I do not think that I can take this project under my wings, because there are too many subjects under my wings. "However, new Sports Bill is being drafted. It will be ready by August. Some of these concern can be incorporated in this Bill," he said. Premier also said that the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry will be instructed to take necessary steps in collaboration with the Board of Control for Cricket for the quick implementation of the project. |
