by Ranil Wijayapala Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Chief Tryggve Tellefsen is to emphasise the fact that the LTTE should abide by the rulings of the SLMM when he meets LTTE Political Wing Leader S. P. Thamilselvan during his two day visit to Vanni. The SLMM Chief's visit today to the Vanni has been seen as a vital development coming as it does since his visit comes following two critical issues between on the heels of the sinking of the LTTE vessel and the LTTE's refusal to abide by the SLMM ruling on the LTTE camp in Wan-Ela in Kinniya. The SLMM Chief's effort to have a settlement over the Wan-Ela camp after fixing a meeting between the Security Forces and the LTTE Trincomalee leadership failed on Wednesday as the LTTE refused to abide by with the SLMM ruling claiming the area came under their territory. "The SLMM Chief will definitely take this issue with the LTTE leadership to emphasise the fact that they should abide by the rulings of the SLMM", SLMM Deputy Chief Hagrup Haukland told the Daily News yesterday. The prime objective of SLMM Chief's visit to Killinochchi is to recommence stalled talks over the sea incident as the SLMM Chief is of the opinion that they should have 'simple and clear' mechanism to monitor sea incidents. The SLMM Chief along with his Naval monitors from Trincomalee and Jaffna met Defence Secretary Austin Fernando and Navy Commander Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri last Friday to recommence talks on sea incidents. The Defence Secretary has reportedly told the SLMM Chief that they should convey to the LTTE that it should abide by the Law of the Sea. The SLMM Chief is due to visit Mullaitivu to meet LTTE's elite Sea Tiger leader Soosai to initiate these discussions. Apart from these issues the SLMM Chief will also take the matter of the release of the sailor who is under LTTE custody since May 30, Haukland added. The issue of co-operation between the LTTE and the SLMM will also be taken for discussion during SLMM Chief's visit to Killinochchi. |
