by Wasantha Ramanayake The Supreme Court will deliver the order today in respect of 15 Petitions of Appeals filed on behalf of the accused, including former Defence Minister Anuruddha Ratwatte and two of his sons, in the Udathalawinna mass murder trial. The appeal were argued before the Bench of five Supreme Court Judges comprising Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva PC, P. Edussuriya, H.S. Yapa, Asoka de Silva and T.B. Weerasuriya. The accused-appellants stated that the bail applications made on behalf of them on April 3, were rejected by the Trial-at-Bar in a descending order. Subsequently, on April 23, they tendered petition appeals from the said order to the Trial-at-Bar to be forwarded to the Supreme Court. They alleged that the said appeals were unanimously rejected by the Trial-at-Bar. They further alleged that it was illegal and the Trial-at-Bar had no jurisdiction to do so. In the course of the inquiry, the Supreme Court, directed the Trial-at-Bar to consider the bail application in terms of the Bail Act. The Trial-at-Bar consequently, with a majority judgment refused the bail applications on June 19.
