Garment manufacturing unit for Bogambara Prison

Peradeniya special corr.

The Bogambara Prisons Kandy, will inaugurate a garment manufacturing unit in the premises on July 14 at 3 p.m. by the Minister of Interior John Amaratunga.

The new service is a deviation from the earlier concept of deterrent punishment based on what was then called retribution. The new projects have proved to be more beneficial to society and to the individual with the education and rehabilitation of the imprisoned offender. Besides engaging them in this type of work it would give them a sense of freedom with discipline, a life similar to what they had been used to before. Initially the project envisages to train a batch of 200 prisoners at a time and employ them in the project itself.

Releasing of the rehabilitated prisoners to society will be economical to the state. It will have an effect on the overcrowding problem and the high reconviction rate is bound to come down, officials said.

The concept of this additional dimension to the existing welfare services it is said was the outcome of a proposal made by the Chief Jailor Samantha Alahakoon and Neil Bogahalanda, a top rung professionals in the apparel industry and chairman 'Freedom 'X'' Garment Ltd., a Manufacturing Institute, to the Senior Superintendent of Prisons Kandy H. M. Walter Bandara.

Numerous meetings had taken place with the bureaucracy and the programme has been made possible, due to the up-front sincerity, a positive administrative image and the enthusiasm of the Senior Superintendent of Prisons bogambara, Walter Bandara.
