Sigiriya group correspondent The Ministry of Agriculture of the Central Province makes arrangements to have a home-garden competition. This is to be held in the Yala season of 2003. Divisional Director of Agriculture Matale M. Perera said malnutrition in the rural areas is rampant. Through this programme we have designed to give an awareness into the aspect of growing daily requirement of food items such as vegetables and fruits. In one way this is economical on the other hand turning the attention to a healthy practice. I found on my field visits parents used to dump the lunch boxes with buns and other snacks food which doesn't promote any nutritious value. Further their lunch parcel is completely free of nutritious leaves such as Gotukola or Mukunuwenna. Charity begins at home. So we aim at achieving the task at the base, said Perera. This programme is arranged at District level. Matale, Kandy and N'Eliya will participate in this competition. A portion of 1,000 square metre garden with fruits and vegetable are recommended. Agricultural officers are instructed to give guidance, paying emphasis on natural manure. The Department of Education too is cooperating in the programme. The Deputy Director of Education-Galewela E. Edmund said he has instructed the School Principals to have their school gardens too, to to take part in this competition. |
