by Sandasen Marasinghe A unique act of gallantry by a young woman who rushed to the aid of dying woman knocked down by a vehicle, came in for high praise by City Coroner, Edward Ahangama yesterday. The elderly woman who was knocked down by a CTB bus lay bleeding and struggling on the road in Olcott Mawatha opposite the Fort Railway station. Although there was a large gathering present at the busy thoroughfare no one ventured to come forward to assist the injured woman. It was at this time that the young woman emerged from the crowd picked up the prone figure and boarded a bus to the Colombo National Hospital. The victim eventually died but the rare feat of gallantry by the young woman was the talking point at the City Coroner's Court. These details were revealed at the inquest held into the death of the unknown woman aged around (50) who succumbed to her injuries at the ICU of the Colombo National Hospital. K. D. Karunatilake (46), the driver of the bus belonging to the Kesbewa depot was produced before the City Coroner. The incident occurred at around 10 a.m. on June 2. H. P. Renuka Hansamali (34) of Matara, an employee of Sri Lanka Telecom testifying at the inquest said that she saw an old woman struggling in a pool of blood lying under the front left wheel of the bus on the day in question. Although there were a large gathering no one dared to take her to the hospital. Thereafter witness took her in a bus keeping the old woman's head on her lap. Victim was unconscious when she was admitted to the ICU of the hospital. Four days later she (witness) was informed of the victim's death. City Coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death. Post-mortem was held by AJMO Dr Handun P. Wijewardana. Evidence was led by Fort Police. |
