Peace process has brought more investors - Minister Bakeer Markar

by Richmond Wijesekera, Bentota Group Correspondent

We are now living in a peaceful atmosphere for about one and a half years owing to the MOU signed between the UNP and the LTTE.

The ethnic war which lasted twenty years has ceased now. Foreign countries are eager to lend a helping hand to us, as they are quite appreciative of the peace process initiated by us. Tourists as well as investors are coming to the country in an unprecedented manner now due to their trust on the good Government of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe," said Minister of Mass Communication, Imthiaz Bakeer Markar. He was addressing a meeting at Ahungalla in the Balapitiya electorate, after upgrading the Ahungalla Post Office.

The Minister also said that the people had wisely thought of giving power to one party at the last general election when the executive powers are with another party. People want the two parties concerned to work together for the well being of the country. Therefore, the parties concerned should keep that in mind if the aim is to develop the country.

The Minister opened the "Sanniwedana Piyasa" at the Watugedera Post Office. He said the "Watugedera Sannivedana Piyasa" is the 57th one of its kind opened so far. A sum of Rs. 1.6 million has been spent for it. Postal facilities which you can find in a small village in England is similar to the facilities at the Watugedera Post Office.

The Postal Service was running at a loss of Rs. 790 million in the past and Trade unions and the postal workers protested on the streets against the proposed selling. When the UNF Government came to power, the Prime Minister thought otherwise and I discussed with him to take necessary steps to uplift the service. I promised in Parliament that the Postal service would not be sold.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs A. H. M. Azwer said that the Mass Communication Ministry has become most productive under the present Minister. The government has initiated an era of prosperity to uplift the country in every respect.

Galle District MP Jayantha Jayaweera, SPC member and Balapitiya UNP Chief Organiser Asoka Danawansa de Silva, Balapitiya PS Chairman A. Dayaratne, PMG M. W. Piyasena, APMG of Southern Province J. W. A. Hemachandra and several others also spoke.
