by Ranga Jayasuriya Former Norwegian Ambassador Jon Westborg yesterday met LTTE political chief Thamilselvam in Kilinochchi in a bid of shuttle diplomacy between the Government and the LTTE to revive the currently stalled peace talks. Westborg - who is now playing the role of special peace envoy following a successful peace facilitation between the Government and the LTTE during his tenure as the Ambassador - held a two-hour discussion with the LTTE political chief at the LTTE peace secretariat. "Westborg and Thamilselvam discussed a gamut of issues on the peace process including Interim Administration, recent developments on the peace front, the revival of talks and redefining the talks agenda,"an LTTE spokesman told the Daily News. He however declined to elaborate on the issues saying that both parties had agreed not to disclose them. Before his meeting with Thamilselvam, Westborg held talks with the LTTE representatives of the now defunct Sub Committee on Immediate Rehabilitation Need (SIHRN) and Tamil Eelam Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO). Westborg's meeting with The LTTE political chief came on the eve the Government's proposals on Interim Administration are to be presented to the LTTE. Westborg who arrived in Colombo last week to play a facilitatory role corresponding between the Government and the LTTE will communicate the Government's proposals to the LTTE. Peace Secretariat sources yesterday expressed optimism that the detailed proposals on IA will be finalised and will be submitted to the LTTE within this week. |
