New Economic center for Hewaheta

by Sigiriya group correspondent

A new economic center to provide a suitable market for the farmer is to be established in Hewaheta at a cost of Rs. 15 million.

Minister of Central Region Development, Tissa Attanayake laid the foundation stone last Thursday. The ministry of Rural Economy is assisting in the project.

It has basic infrastructure facilities with 20 trading stalls. People of Hanguranketa, Walapane - Adikaragama - Padiyapelella and Rekillagaskada will benefit by this centre.

"The term productivity is a miracle term in the field of economic growth. It is the key to development that transforms the economy to meet the challenges of the time. Rural poverty and malnutrition are the greatest enemies which we hope to eliminate through our development projects such as establishing economic centres which provides a suitable market for agricultural products. They also increase the competitiveness and reduce the intervention of middlemen," the Minister said.

"About 60 per cent of our rural population depend on agriculture but their contribution to the Gross National Product is low. In the age of industries, agricultural products tend to suffer the consequences of global cyclone.

Such shaky situations can be controlled through economic centres. The Minister of Rural Industries and the Deputy Minister of Finance Bandula Gunawardhana, said the Country is just recovering from a severe economic recession and industrial exports have shown an increase.

Central Bank report showed the upward trend of the economy. This is not a miracle, but well projected economic plans, under the Regaining Sri Lanka programme.

"Another factor that fosters growth is peace. Government peace moves have resuscitated economic resurgence," Gunawardhana said.
