by Asanga Warnakulasuriya "The Kukule Ganga Hydropower Plant passed its acid test when it stood firm against the recent disastrous floods, the worst in decades, Deputy Director General of Japan Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC) Ryutaro Koga said at the final inspection of the project last week. The Kukule Ganga Hydropower Plant (KGHP) will add 317GWH to the National Grid on September 19 when Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will open the plant. The KGHP will be equipped with a fully automated control centre, the smallest of its nature in Sri Lanka which can handle almost every activity from generating of electricity to switching, a Senior CEB Engineer said. An Austrian based company VaTech has provided the technical assistance in putting up the control centre. The switching of 70MW to the national grid will be through Matugama, he added. The first turbine capable of generating 35MW, currently undergoing test runs will be connected to National Grid on July 14. Describing various environment aspects of the KGHP, Project Manager Herath said second underground power plant will cause minimum disturbances to the environment since it will be using the method of " run over the river" to generate electricity. |
