ITI workshop on Essential Oils and Oleoresins

The Natural Products Development Group of the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) will conduct a one-day training workshop on "Industrial processing, distillation and quality assurance of Essential oils and production of Spice oleoresins" today at the ITI auditorium at Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7. The program will comprise lectures as well as laboratory quality assurance techniques that will include Gas Chromatographic techniques for essential oils such as cinnamon leaf and bark oil, citronella oil, pepper oil and oleoresins as well as pilot plant demonstrations of essential oil distillation and oleoresin extraction techniques.

Sri Lanka, the sole supplier of cinnamon bark oil exporting approximately 6 MT to the world market also exports over 175 MT of cinnamon leaf oil. The contribution from these exports to the national income is about Rs. 400 million annually. Citronella oil, pepper oil, nutmeg oil, clove oil and cardamom oil are also important raw materials in the flavour and fragrance manufacturing industry. The spice oleoresin industry is at present not well established in Sri Lanka, however, small quantities are manufactured for the export market.

The export earnings from the essential oil sector has decreased in the first quarter of this year when compared to the same quarter last year, thus it becomes all the more important for exporters to prove the authenticity and quality of local produce as adulteration of these oils is common in trade.

The program will include an overview on world essential oil industry, comparison of different distillation techniques used in Sri Lanka with those in developed countries, market information on essential oil, quality standards for essential oils and oleoresins, expected quality criteria in Europe and in USA and web based information on essential oil and oleoresins.

The panel of speakers will include former UNIDO Consultant, Dr. R. O. B. Wijesekera and S. P. U. Peiris, Director Export Development Board as well as Ms. Nalini Amarasinghe, Head, Process and Plant Engineering Division, ITI, K. R. Dayananda, Senior Research Officer, Natural Products Development Group, ITI, Ms. Dilmani Warnasuriya, Manager, Information Services Centre, ITI and Ms. Purnima Jayasinghe Scientific Officer, Information Service Centre, ITI.
