SLMM Head obtains information on LTTE Wan-Ela camp by Ranil Wijayapala The Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Tryggve Tellefsen was in Trincomalee to obtain first-hand information on the LTTE camp in Wan-Ela in government controlled areas of Trincomalee prior to his visit to Kilinochchi this week. The SLMM Chief is due to take up the violation of the ceasefire by the LTTE of constructing a camp in the government controlled areas in Kinniya with the LTTE leadership during his visit to Kilinochchi this week. SLMM Deputy Chief Hagrup Haukland told the Daily News yesterday that the SLMM Chief was also due to meet LTTE Trincomalee Political wing leader Thilak in Sampur last evening to discuss the matter. The SLMM Chief has also visited Wan-Ela camp yesterday to obtain first-hand information, the Deputy Chief said. Despite SLMM Trincomalee office insisting that the LTTE should take action to remove the camp, no action has yet being taken so far to remove the camp. However, the LTTE has suspended the construction work of the camp after the stand-off between the Security Forces and LTTE cadres in the area over the incident. The SLMM is keeping a constant eye on the area after a ruling was given on Monday that the construction of the camp was a violation of the ceasefire agreement. The SLMM Deputy Chief said they have no other option other than insisting that the LTTE abide by the rulings of the SLMM in accordance with the ceasefire agreement, since they have not been vested with execution powers against violations. |
