LTTE releases two policemen

by Ranil Wijayapala

The LTTE leaders in Batticaloa, reciprocating the release of its Puttur leader on bail by the Trincomalee High Court on Friday, handed over the two Policemen abducted by them in Government controlled areas to Batticaloa SSP Lasantha de Silva on Saturday evening.

Spokeswoman for the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Agness Bragdottir said the LTTE member Varathan handed over the two Policemen on Saturday at 6 p.m. to the Batticaloa SSP.

Police Constable Senadheera and Reserve Police Constable D.S. Nihal Somasiri attached to Traffic division of the Eravur Police were abducted by the LTTE in the government controlled areas reportedly under the instructions of LTTE Batticaloa leader Karuna.

Following the abduction of two Police officers, a close ally of Karuna has reportedly told a senior military official in Batticaloa over the phone that they had arrested the two Police constables and they will be released if they take action to release their Puttur leader Subaraj Thevanayagam.

Subaraj Thevanayagam was arrested by the Police on murder charges over the alleged killing of a Tamil Sergeant attached to Sri Lanka National Guard in Puttur, since an eye witness to the murder had identified him as the assasin of the Tamil sergeant. The SLMM Chief also took this matter with the LTTE Political Wing Chief S.P.

Thamilselvan during his visit to Kilinochchi and fixed a meeting with Security and Police personnel in Batticaloa with LTTE area leaders under the facilitation of Batticaloa SLMM office. At this meeting the two parties came to an agreement to take immediate action to release the LTTE member to ensure the release of the two Police constables.

Subaraj was released on cash and surety bail on Friday after a stern instructions by the High Court Judge that no intimidation should be caused to the eye witnesses to the killing as the state counsel objected to the granting of bail considering the security of the eye witnesses.
